A dangerous super typhoon, Sinlaku, is bearing down on the remote US islands of the Northern Mariana Islands. The National Weather Service forecasts destructive winds, heavy rain, and flooding as the storm approaches.
Guam, a US territory, is also under a tropical storm warning with potential damaging winds. The US Coast Guard issued flood and high wind warnings over the weekend.
Sinlaku, producing sustained winds of 173 mph, is the strongest tropical cyclone on Earth this year. It is expected to impact Rota, Tinian, and Saipan as a Category 4 or 5 typhoon.
US President Donald Trump has approved emergency disaster declarations for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, authorizing additional emergency services.
