North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reiterated Pyongyang's backing for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, pledging assistance for Moscow's victory in what he termed a "sacred" war. North Korea has supplied Russia with missiles, munitions, and troops, while allegedly receiving financial aid, military technology, and food in return.

During a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Kim stated North Korea would "fully support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend the national sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests." He expressed confidence that the Russian forces would achieve victory in this "just sacred war."

Discussions also covered deeper military ties, with Moscow ready to sign a cooperation plan for 2027-2031. Both leaders attended a ceremony for a memorial complex honoring North Korean soldiers killed in Ukraine, featuring dramatic displays of their combat efforts.

A 2024 military treaty obligates both nations to provide immediate military aid if either is attacked. This engagement follows Moscow's claim of recovering parts of Kursk, a region where North Korean soldiers reportedly aided Russian forces against a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

President Putin commended the North Korean troops' bravery. Seoul estimates around 2,000 North Koreans have died in the conflict, with reports of strict orders against capture.
