A small plane crash in the Bahamas has killed ten people, including nine passengers and the pilot. The accident occurred on the country's 53rd independence anniversary.
The Cessna 402, operated by Flamingo Air, was traveling from Lynden Pindling International Airport to San Andros Airport when it crashed into bushes prior to landing. Officials reported the aircraft encountered difficulties.
Prime Minister Philip Davis addressed the nation, stating the day of celebration had become a day of mourning. He initially reported one survivor but later confirmed that person also died from injuries.
The Ministry of Aviation temporarily suspended Flamingo Air's air operator certificate as a precautionary safety measure. The ministry referenced two safety incidents that had occurred earlier that same Friday. One involved a different Flamingo Air plane that returned to Nassau after the pilot reported an issue; a fire broke out after all passengers had disembarked.
The airline stated it is cooperating fully with authorities.
