Pope Leo XIV on Sunday rejected claims that God justifies war, praying for Christians in the Middle East during a Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

Amid ongoing wars involving the U.S., Israel, Iran, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Leo emphasized that Jesus is the 'King of Peace' who opposes violence.

“Jesus does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war,” Leo said. “He rejects them.”

Leaders on all sides have cited faith to legitimize military action. The Pope urged prayer for peace and reconciliation.

Earlier, Israeli authorities blocked Catholic leaders from accessing the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem-a rare restriction affecting centuries-old traditions.

Leo called attention to global suffering, urging believers to remember the persecuted during Holy Week.

Restoring tradition, Leo will conduct Holy Thursday foot washing at St. John Lateran and lead Good Friday services at the Colosseum.

He will celebrate Easter Sunday in St. Peter’s Square and deliver the Easter blessing.
