Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday he believes the war with Ukraine is coming to an end. Speaking to reporters, Putin stated, "I think that the matter is coming to an end." His comments came as a three-day ceasefire, brokered by President Donald Trump, began Saturday and runs through Monday. The truce includes a suspension of all kinetic activity and a prisoner swap of 1,000 prisoners from each side.
President Trump announced the ceasefire on Truth Social, saying the pause coincides with Russia's Victory Day celebrations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the prisoner exchange and thanked Trump for his diplomatic efforts. Zelenskyy noted the exchange was agreed upon through U.S.-mediated negotiations.
The war, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022, has lasted over four years. Putin added he would only consider direct talks with Zelenskyy after a lasting peace deal is finalized.
