A Quebec hair salon has been ordered to pay $500 in compensation to a non-binary individual after a ruling by the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal. The decision stems from a complaint against Station10 hair salon for a booking system that only offered male and female gender options.

Station10 co-owner Alexis Labrecque stated the website was built in 2023 and a non-gender option was added later, but the tribunal found the original system discriminatory. Labrecque expressed concern that the ruling could impact other businesses requiring gender selection for clients.

Alexe Frédéric Migneault, the complainant, views the decision as a significant step for non-binary recognition in the legal system, highlighting the lack of legal precedent for non-binary individuals.

Migneault emphasized that while non-binary people represent a small percentage of the population, they deserve equal participation in society. The salon has until March 5 to decide whether to appeal the ruling.
