Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles at Kyiv early Thursday, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others. The attack came just hours after a rare daytime assault on Wednesday.

The head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, warned residents to stay in shelters. The strikes damaged multiple residential buildings and civilian infrastructure across several districts.

In the Darnytsia district, a residential building partially collapsed, trapping people under the rubble. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed a search and rescue operation is underway. Ukraine's Emergency Service said at least 10 people were rescued.

Drone debris sparked a fire on the roof of a five-storey building in the Dniprovskyi district. In the Obolonskyi district, debris hit a 12-storey apartment building, also causing a fire. Other debris struck a non-residential building, a parking structure, and a business center.

Earlier Wednesday, Moscow launched a massive daytime aerial attack with over 800 drones, killing at least six. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the drones came in waves, deliberately targeting regions near NATO borders.

Until recently, Russia mainly struck at night. But that tactic shifted in March and April, with Moscow now combining heavy night strikes with equally heavy daytime assaults. The Institute for the Study of War warns this change is likely to increase civilian casualties.
