Rome's iconic Colosseum has undergone a major restoration, uncovering parts of its original structure hidden for centuries. New travertine marble blocks have been installed, reinstating the monument's original perimeter and highlighting details like engraved entrance numbers that once guided spectators.
Architect Stefano Boeri stated the project aimed to restore the monument's proportions and original levels, making its footprint and geometric base more legible. The work also involved reconsidering the stormwater drainage system, resulting in a hydraulically organized and more accessible public space.
Archaeologist Alfonsina Russo explained the restoration addressed missing sections of entry corridors, some of which collapsed starting in the 6th century AD due to ground instability. The Colosseum continues to be Italy's most visited tourist attraction.
