A Russian drone struck an apartment building in the eastern Romanian city of Galati early Friday, injuring two people and sparking a fire, according to Romania's defense ministry.

About 70 residents were evacuated as emergency crews extinguished the blaze on the 10th floor. The drone's full explosive payload detonated upon impact.

Romania's foreign ministry condemned the attack as a serious and irresponsible escalation, informing NATO and requesting accelerated anti-drone capabilities.

NATO condemned Russia's recklessness, vowing to strengthen defenses. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after the drone entered Romanian airspace.

This incident marks the first time Romanian civilians have been hurt since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Drone fragments have been found on Romanian territory 47 times, 12 this year alone.

Meanwhile, Ukraine reported a drone attack on the port of Izmail overnight, and in Russian-controlled Donetsk, three utility workers were killed by a Ukrainian drone.
