Russia used the powerful hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile during a mass drone and missile attack on Kyiv on Sunday, killing at least two people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed it was the third time the weapon has been used in the four-year war.

The attack damaged buildings across the capital, including near government offices, residential buildings, schools and a market, Ukrainian authorities said. At least 83 people were wounded.

Air raid sirens blared through the night as smoke billowed across the city. The attack included 600 strike drones and 90 missiles, according to Ukraine's Air Force. Ukrainian air defenses destroyed 549 drones and 55 missiles. Nineteen missiles failed to reach their targets.

Albania's foreign minister, Ferit Hoxha, said the residence of the Albanian ambassador to Ukraine was hit, calling it a grave escalation.

The Oreshnik missile struck the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region, Zelenskyy said on Telegram. Russia confirmed the use of the weapon, saying it struck Ukrainian military targets in retaliation for a Ukrainian attack on a college dormitory in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he ordered the retaliation after a drone strike on the college killed 21 people. Russia-installed authorities in the Luhansk region declared two days of mourning.

At a UN Security Council meeting, Ukrainian Ambassador Andrii Melnyk denied Russian accusations of war crimes, calling them propaganda.

Kyiv's European allies, including France's Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Friedrich Merz, condemned the strikes. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said EU diplomats will meet to discuss increasing pressure on Russia.

The apparent failure to intercept all ballistic missiles highlights Ukraine's shortage of air defense missiles capable of downing such weapons, particularly U.S. Patriot interceptors. Developing a domestic alternative has become a top priority.

Damage was recorded in 50 locations across Kyiv, including residential buildings, shopping centers, and schools. Fires continued into the morning, complicating rescue efforts.

One resident, Svitlana Onofryichuk, who had worked at a damaged market for 22 years, said she is leaving Kyiv: "My job is gone, everything is gone, everything has burned down."

Another resident, Yevhen Zosin, described being thrown back by a shock wave while grabbing his dog. "We both survived," he said.

In Kyiv's Shevchenko district, a five-story residential building was hit, killing one person. A school building was damaged while people sheltered inside. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed supermarkets and warehouses were also damaged.

Multiple communities in the Kyiv region reported damage. In Russia, a Ukrainian drone killed a civilian in Grayvoron, Belgorod region. Russia's Defense Ministry said it shot down 33 Ukrainian drones overnight.
