KYIV - Russia and Ukraine traded attacks Friday, with a two-day unilateral ceasefire declared by Moscow around its World War II commemorations appearing to be in tatters.
Ukraine never agreed to halt strikes, accusing Vladimir Putin of wanting a pause only to stage his annual Victory Day parade on Red Square. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his earlier counter-proposal for a short truce was ignored.
Russia has threatened a massive strike on the heart of Kyiv if the parade is disrupted. On the streets of the capital, residents shrugged off the warning.
"Nothing new will happen. I'm worried, but it's become routine, unfortunately," said Vasyl Kobzar, a 40-year-old bank employee.
Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 67 drones overnight. Zelenskyy wrote on X: "Despite the declared ceasefire, the enemy has not reduced the intensity of assault operations." He vowed Ukraine would respond in kind.
Kyiv struck an oil depot in Russia's Yaroslavl region and a refinery in the Perm region. Russia said it downed more than 400 Ukrainian drones and closed 13 airports in the south after a drone hit an air navigation center in Rostov-on-Don.
Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians have been killed since Putin ordered the invasion in February 2022.
