Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Moscow’s loyalty to Iran during the Iranian New Year, Nowruz, congratulating Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. In a statement released by the Kremlin, Putin emphasized that Russia remains a 'reliable partner' for Tehran amid escalating regional tensions.
Despite this, the depth of Russia’s backing is questioned, with some Iranian officials noting limited tangible support during recent crises. The Kremlin claims US and Israeli attacks on Iran have destabilized global energy markets and labeled the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as 'cynical'.
Moscow has not committed to mutual defense, and publicly opposes Iran developing nuclear weapons, fearing regional arms proliferation.
