At least 12 people have been killed in a mass shooting at an informal settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, South African police confirmed late Tuesday night.
Emergency services responded to reports of active gunfire around 11:10 PM local time. The attack resulted in eight men and three women dying at the scene, with one additional victim succumbing to injuries in the hospital.
Police stated that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a nearby petrol station. The group allegedly entered the settlement through multiple entrances, firing on residents before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Nine other individuals were transported to various medical facilities for treatment of gunshot wounds. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, though the motive remains unknown as investigations continue.
South Africa currently records one of the highest murder rates globally, averaging approximately 60 killings per day.
