Three people are dead and more than 20 injured after a tram derailed in central Milan, colliding with a building.

The Number 9 tram reportedly swerved at a switch track, deviating from its intended path. Video footage captured the tram nearly tipping before the impact.

Mayor Beppe Sala suggested human error, stating the driver, an experienced employee, may have failed to switch tracks. The driver, who was on his shift for only an hour, skipped a stop before the incident and is being treated for injuries.

One passenger died on the tram and another on the street. The remaining injured are not in life-threatening condition.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. ATM, Milan's public transport company, is cooperating with prosecutors to determine the cause of the derailment.
