Thousands marched in France Saturday after the killing of a 23-year-old far-right activist, Quentin Deranque, who died from brain injuries sustained in Lyon.
The march, organized by far-right groups, saw demonstrators chant "justice for Quentin" and "antifa assassin." Police reported Nazi salutes and racist insults filmed during the event.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged calm and respect, emphasizing "firmness and responsibility."
Deranque died after an altercation between far-left and far-right supporters at a student event. Lyon is considered a hub for far-right activism, with militant left-leaning groups forming in response.
Seven individuals are under formal investigation for Deranque's murder, including a former aide to a hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party lawmaker. LFI has condemned the killing and denied responsibility for the violence.
