US President Donald Trump says he will talk to Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te about a possible arms sale, a sharp departure from diplomatic tradition. US and Taiwanese leaders have not spoken directly since 1979 when Washington severed formal ties with Taiwan to recognize Beijing.

China claims Taiwan as its territory and opposes official exchanges. Beijing warned against sending "wrong signals to separatist forces."

Trump said he will decide on a $14 billion arms package including anti-drone equipment and missile systems. A proposed visit by a top Pentagon official is on hold until Trump decides.

This echoes Trump's 2016 call with Taiwan's then-leader, which angered China. President Lai, in office since 2024, has boosted defense spending amid rising Chinese military pressure.
