BEIJING: China likely views United States President Donald Trump’s abrupt postponement of a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as further proof of Washington’s unpredictability. Analysts suggest Beijing is managing the situation internally, avoiding public escalation while keeping communication open.

Trump cited the Iran war as the reason for pushing the meeting back by about a month, originally scheduled for late March. He later said he expected to visit in five to six weeks.

Chinese officials have maintained a calm stance, emphasizing continued communication on the summit dates. Analysts believe Beijing may use the delay to better prepare for negotiations, refining its approach on trade and other sensitive issues.

The postponement has raised questions about US intentions, with some analysts suggesting it could signal strategic incoherence. However, China appears unwilling to publicly challenge Trump, recognizing the US’s ability to create disruption.
