Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks against Moscow and the surrounding region overnight, striking an oil depot and logistics facilities more than 250 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported more than 400 Ukrainian drones targeted the region. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces intercepted 381 drones. At least 10 people were wounded in the Moscow region, including three Chinese nationals.
The scale of the operation indicates Ukraine is building a sustained campaign against infrastructure supporting Russia's war effort. By targeting oil facilities and transportation networks, Kyiv seeks to disrupt fuel and supply flow to Russian forces and force Moscow to divert air defenses.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strikes on logistics facilities and an oil depot. The company Wildberries, known as Russia's Amazon, said its logistics center was temporarily evacuated.
Analysts note the strikes cause hardship but are unlikely to change President Vladimir Putin's war approach. The operation followed one of Russia's largest ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv.
A Russian missile attack near Odesa also struck the cargo ship Golden Leo, killing 10 people. The escalation comes as Zelenskyy faces domestic pressure over his removal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Thousands have protested Fedorov's dismissal, demanding his reinstatement and the removal of commander-in-chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi. Zelenskyy indicated consultations on military leadership are ongoing.
