Rescue teams are working to free civilians, including a 15-year-old girl and her family, trapped under rubble in Kyiv. The capital suffered one of its largest Russian attacks to date, killing at least 18 people and injuring nearly 90 others.

Matthias Schmale, the UN's top aid official in Ukraine, confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing. He noted that millions of Kyiv residents spent hours in bomb shelters during the assault. The attack damaged apartment blocks, a hotel, a market, and struck an ambulance station, injuring several health workers.

Schmale stated that civilians across Ukraine are experiencing a "continuing deadly pattern" of violence. Between December 2025 and May 2026, civilian casualties in Ukraine increased by 40% compared to the previous year, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission.

Aid organizations are providing emergency support, including shelter and mental health services, to nearly one million people affected by the strikes. Schmale warned that the psychological trauma inflicted by the war continues to deepen with each attack.
