United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has launched an urgent humanitarian appeal for $308.3 million to support civilians in war-torn Lebanon. The appeal comes amid ongoing Israeli strikes and rocket launches from Hezbollah, which have displaced approximately 816,000 Lebanese. Guterres stated, "Solidarity in words must be matched by solidarity in action. This aid is urgently needed." The conflict has resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including children, and has severely disrupted access to essential services like food, water, and healthcare. Over 90,000 people, predominantly Syrians, have also crossed into Syria.
The Secretary-General emphasized the need for swift, flexible funding and safe access for humanitarian workers. He called for an immediate ceasefire to create conditions for negotiations and the restoration of Lebanon's territorial integrity. "The world must show the people of Lebanon our strongest support in this hour of grave danger and profound need," Guterres urged, highlighting the courage and solidarity shown by Lebanese citizens, including those sheltering displaced families and health workers serving under immense pressure. UN agencies and humanitarian partners are working with national authorities to deliver critical relief, including food, water, and health care. The flash appeal will fund these lifesaving efforts for the next three months.
