A United Nations peacekeeper has died from injuries sustained when shelling hit his base near Marjayoun, southeastern Lebanon, the UNIFIL mission confirmed Thursday. Two others were wounded and are receiving treatment.
The Serbian national died at a Beirut hospital after being airlifted from the scene. UNIFIL condemned the attack, warning that deliberate strikes on peacekeepers are grave violations of international law and may constitute war crimes.
The incident is the latest in a series of deadly attacks since fighting between Hezbollah and Israel reignited. A conditional ceasefire agreement reached Wednesday in Washington has been rejected by Hezbollah, and Israeli strikes resumed Thursday.
UNIFIL reported an increased number of trajectories and impacts in southern Lebanon, calling for an end to the violence. The origin of the shelling remains unclear.
