The US State Department has officially designated Brazil’s two most powerful criminal organizations, Comando Vermelho (CV) and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), as Specially Designated Global Terrorists. The move places them on the same federal list as ISIS and al-Qaeda, effective June 5, 2026.
The terrorism label automatically freezes any US-held assets of these groups. Any American individual or company providing material support now faces federal prosecution.
The PCC was already under counter-narcotics sanctions, but this escalation expands prohibited transactions and increases penalties. Both groups have reportedly used Bitcoin mining and crypto to launder drug profits.
For investors, the immediate impact is higher compliance costs. Banks, payment firms, and agribusinesses with Brazilian exposure must upgrade screening and prove their supply chains avoid any contact with these organizations.
The designation sets a precedent: the US is now applying terror labels to criminal groups focused on drug trafficking, expanding the potential target list for future sanctions.
