A man has been rescued alive after being trapped for eight days in the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela.

Emergency workers freed Hernán Gil more than 100 hours after first locating him under 140 tonnes of debris. The operation involved teams from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States.

The rescue was described as technically complex. Access ducts built by rescuers collapsed multiple times, highlighting the danger to both Gil and the teams working to save him.

Overnight, rescuers established visual contact. Footage from a camera inserted into the rubble showed a Chilean firefighter speaking with Gil, who was wearing protective gear passed to him earlier.

Almost 2,300 people are confirmed dead following the quakes on June 24. Tens of thousands remain missing.
