A woman and child escaped a deadly mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, by jumping from a rooftop. Authorities state a father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own, during a violent incident that began Sunday morning.
The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, died following a gun battle with responding officers. The motive remains unclear, but police believe it stemmed from a domestic dispute. Two adult women, including the children's mother, were also injured and are recovering. The eight children killed ranged in age from 3 to 11.
Police Chief Wayne Smith indicated that the gunman also attacked another home, took three children, and fled the scene before officers located him. The weapon used was described as an assault-style weapon. Officials emphasized the need for community action to prevent domestic violence.
