Two people have been charged following the death of 22-year-old Barinder Singh in a highway shooting near Leduc, Alberta. Singh was fatally shot in the neck while driving with friends on March 14. Suspects Jimmy Gassner, 18, and Deon Libsekil, 23, were apprehended by RCMP. The motive remains unclear, though police assure the public the act was random and not racially motivated.

Singh and his friends were unaffiliated with criminal activity or gangs. Officers are in contact with Singh’s family who are outside Canada.

Both suspects have previous police records unrelated to this crime and will face second-degree murder charges. Libsekil faces additional charges as an accessory after the fact.

The investigation, described as complex, was completed within two weeks, with the RCMP commending the teams involved.
