A deeply affecting image capturing the human toll of U.S. immigration enforcement has been awarded World Press Photo of the Year. Titled "Separated by ICE," the photograph by Carol Guzy shows two young girls clinging to their father, Luis, an Ecuadorian migrant, as he is detained at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building in New York.

The image, shot for the Miami Herald, was selected from over 57,000 entries. Judges lauded its raw emotional intensity and its stark depiction of family separation and the unknown that follows detention. Photojournalist Carol Guzy stated the image should be painful to view and hopes it spurs action, emphasizing the resilience of families facing adversity.
