Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the country's commander-in-chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi. The move follows days of street protests triggered by the earlier removal of popular Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Zelensky replaced Syrskyi with General Mykhailo Drapatyi. The dismissals come amid reported internal conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi over military strategy.
Fedorov, 35, was widely praised for energizing the defence ministry and fighting corruption. Syrskyi, 60, was often seen as a traditional commander resistant to change.
In a statement, Zelensky thanked Syrskyi for his role in defending Kyiv at the start of the 2022 Russian invasion. Drapatyi is described as a popular, battle-hardened general who previously led Ukraine's Joint Forces.
