Graeme Souness reveals he underwent emergency heart surgery

Graeme Souness has revealed he had to undergo emergency heart surgery after having an 'episode' while watching England's recent UEFA Nations League win over Finland on September 10.

The Liverpool legend has had a history of heart problems since retiring from playing in 1991 and was diagnosed with coronary heart disease at the age of just 38.

Souness has also previously undergone a triple heart bypass, but continues to be an ever-present and enthusiastic figure as a pundit and charity fundraiser.

The 71-year-old is one of the Premier League's most popular pundits with his column in Mail Sport offering expert insight and also a favourite across several broadcasters where Souness is often asked for his verdict.

However, a recent scare that occurred while Souness was at home has left fans worried as the Scotland legend explained the circumstances surrounding his latest emergency incident.

Successful surgery to fit a new stent into one of his coronary arteries has got Souness back on form and thanked his expert cardiology time while conitinuing to recover.   

'We had a bit of a setback last week,' Souness told the BBC while explaining his heart scare.

'I had a bit of an episode 10 days ago, where I was watching England play Finland got up at half 10 to make a cup of tea, felt chest pains.

'Without dwelling on it three days later, I had a couple of stents put into one of my coronary arteries. I feel great,' he added.

'I've got a great cardiologist Suneel Talwar down in Bournemouth. And he's looked after me for 15 years and I'm in great hands,' said Souness.

Th former Liverpool and Newcastle manager was previously rushed to hospital in 2015 when he suffered a sudden heart attack that required immediate treatment and thankfully coming through the procedure ok.

Souness has recently been attempting to raise money for DEBRA, the butterfly skin charity, but was unable to complete the bike part of the challenge last week until chest pains stopped him from taking part.
