Neal Maupay admits 'relief' at leaving Everton

Neal Maupay has revealed why he decided to post a clip from Shawshank Redemption during his Everton exit.

Maupay departed Everton to join Marseille on a season long loan at the end of the transfer window with the deal including an obligation for the French club to purchase him next summer for just £3m.

Maupay clearly couldn't contain his delight in leaving Goodison Park, as the 28-year-old cheekily shared the escape scene from the movie Shawshank Redemption on his social media before the transfer had even been sealed.

The film follows the story of Andy Dufresne, who is wrongfully sentenced to two life terms in prison and proceeds to break out.

Speaking during his first press conference for his new club, Maupay confirmed that he shared the video to express his relief at escaping his Merseyside club.

Reacting to a Tweet from Fabrizio Romano, Maupay posted a video of Andy Dufresne celebrating his escape from prison

He said: 'supporters like to discuss, criticise, and celebrate and it doesn't bother me because I consider myself a normal person and if everyone can tweet I can do it too.'

'I published a funny little video because my situation at Everton was known, I wanted to leave and the club didn't want to keep me.

Maupay has a reputation for having no filter on social media, something which has played a role in him becoming a love-hate figure.

He joined Everton from Brighton in a £15m deal in 2022 but would only go on to return one goal in 32 appearances across all competitions for the Blues.
