JetBlue has raised its checked bag fees, marking the first time a U.S. airline has done so in response to soaring oil prices.

The move comes as the war in Iran continues to drive energy costs upward across the aviation industry. Starting immediately, passengers must now pay a minimum of $39 to check a bag-up from $35. A $10 fee applies for same-day bookings, and additional charges are added during peak travel periods.

The airline emphasized that these adjustments help maintain competitive base fares while preserving key amenities like complimentary snacks, Wi-Fi, and entertainment. Frequent flyer members and cardholders retain free first-bag privileges.

Transatlantic flights feature varying fee structures, with basic economy tickets starting at $64 for checked baggage.

This update follows American Airlines' 2008 introduction of bag fees during high oil price periods.

JetBlue has not specified whether changes affect existing reservations or only new bookings.
