After a decade of service, Angus the English springer spaniel is retiring from his unique role detecting C. difficile at Vancouver General Hospital.

Since 2016, Angus has used his keen sense of smell to locate hidden traces of the dangerous bacterium in hospitals across British Columbia and Canada. His work contributed to infection control efforts in over 32 facilities.

Trained by Teresa Zurberg, Angus identified environmental reservoirs of the superbug missed by standard cleaning protocols. These alerts enabled targeted disinfection using UV light robots.

Zurberg noted that Angus, now 13, is slowing down physically but remains mentally sharp. He will now assist at the Semiahmoo Fish And Game Club recovering lost arrows.

Originally inspired by Zurberg’s own experience with C. difficile, the K9 detection program became internationally recognized. Angus has met numerous dignitaries and may soon receive special commendation for his public service.
