An AI speech assistant has demonstrated significant reductions in nursing documentation time, according to a German long-term care study. Clinicians in long-term care facilities, where documentation can consume up to one-third of a shift, may find relief from administrative burdens.

A pre-post time-motion study observed 52 registered nurses across 14 facilities. The implementation of a mobile, domain-specific AI speech assistant led to an adjusted mean decrease of 15 minutes in documentation time per morning shift. This represents an approximate 28% reduction from baseline levels.

The analysis also indicated significant reductions in self-reported documentation time and interruptions. Staff reported improved satisfaction with the AI speech assistant itself, though overall workplace satisfaction did not change significantly.

These findings suggest that integrating AI speech assistants into routine care can streamline administrative workloads and enhance perceived efficiency without negatively impacting usability. This could potentially support workforce sustainability and address staffing pressures in healthcare settings.
