A nationwide Swedish cohort study reveals that bereavement is linked to a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke. The risk was especially pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Researchers found the highest cardiovascular risk in the days immediately following the loss, particularly within the first seven days. The effect was strongest after losing a partner or sibling, and the association was amplified during 2020-2021.
The study suggests that pandemic-related disruptions to healthcare, social isolation, and interruptions to grief support may have intensified the physiological and psychological impact. These findings underscore bereavement as a critical period for cardiovascular monitoring and early intervention.
