Not every item of clothing can withstand a high-heat tumble dry without shrinking, stretching, or falling apart. Some dryer habits could lead to costly repairs or even fires.

Putting fabrics stained with flammable substances such as gasoline, alcohol, or oils into the dryer could cause them to catch fire, warns the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Rubber-backed bath mats can disintegrate in the dryer, leaving pieces that clog vents and damage the motor. Running shoes can shrink or get damaged by heat, while spandex and elastic materials may lose their shape.

Large comforters and duvets can overheat the dryer, leading to failure. Clothing covered in pet hair can clog vents, increase drying time, and create fire hazards.

To protect your dryer and your home, avoid these items and follow safer drying practices.
