Federal health officials are tracking a major cyclosporiasis outbreak, with the CDC confirming more than 1,600 cases across 34 states. An additional 5,000 potential infections are under investigation.
The outbreak prompted a significant recall from Taylor Farms. The company voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico, affecting products sold at Walmart under the Marketside brand and served at Taco Bell restaurants.
A lettuce sample from Taylor Farms initially tested positive for the parasite on July 18, but the FDA later confirmed it was a false positive. Despite this, the recall remains in effect.
The affected Walmart products are 12-oz and 24-oz Marketside Iceberg Salad bags and 8-oz and 16-oz Marketside Shredded Lettuce. They were sold in 15 states, primarily in the South and Midwest.
Taco Bell confirmed it pulled the lettuce from restaurants in at least five states after discussions with public health officials.
The illness, caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, typically causes severe diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue. It is treatable with antibiotics but can last over a month. The CDC reports 141 hospitalizations linked to this outbreak.
