The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating a historic outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a severe intestinal illness, with cases reported in over 30 states.
The investigation has focused on Taylor Farms, a leading global producer of salads and fresh foods. The company issued a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce products on July 17.
The FDA initially reported a positive Cyclospora test on a Taylor Farms lettuce sample but later stated it was a false positive. The agency is continuing its trace-back investigation.
Taylor Farms is a $7 billion revenue company with major retail and food service clients. Its products are sold in supermarkets including Walmart, Target, and Whole Foods.
The company has also supplied lettuce to fast food chains. Taco Bell was linked to the initial recall. Chipotle confirmed it sources from Taylor Farms but said it does not believe its ingredients are involved.
Taylor Farms has faced previous recalls over the years, which company leadership has attributed to its massive scale of operations. The firm was founded in 1995 in California's Salinas Valley.
