A new SARS-CoV-2 variant, BA.3.2-known as the ‘cicada’ variant-has been identified in 23 countries since its initial detection in South Africa in November 2024.
The strain, genetically distinct from JN.1 lineages circulating in the U.S., began showing increased detections in September 2025. By December 2025, weekly reports reached 30% in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands.
BA.3.2 has spread across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. Despite rising cases, overall COVID-19 incidence has not surged significantly.
The CDC warns that BA.3.2’s spike protein mutations allow it to evade antibodies. Limited genomic surveillance may underestimate its true extent.
The variant could lead to seasonal surges in infections, prompting calls for continued vaccination and surveillance efforts.
