Vernon Jubilee Hospital's psychiatric ward is operating at full capacity, raising alarms after a 22-year-old patient died following a mental health crisis. Ezra Cool admitted himself seeking help on February 6 and was involuntarily admitted under the Mental Health Act. He reportedly spent six days waiting for a bed in the emergency department hallway.

His mother, Christal Cool, expressed deep concern for his safety while waiting in the hallway. Ezra Cool later escaped the hospital and was fatally struck by a vehicle nearby.

Interior Health confirmed the psychiatric ward is at capacity, stating staffing levels are stable. The health authority did not detail where patients are treated when the unit is full. B.C. Opposition critic Claire Rattée pointed to broader provincial capacity challenges in psychiatric care, emphasizing the need for increased resources and timely support.

The Ministry of Health stated efforts are underway to expand mental health services across the province, acknowledging more work is needed. Interior Health is reviewing the circumstances of Ezra Cool's case.
