A new analysis of media coverage from 2017 to 2024 reveals that psychedelic treatments for depression and PTSD are portrayed significantly more positively than established antidepressant therapies.
Researchers analyzed 6,805 publications using natural language processing, finding that positive emotion and overall sentiment were strongly associated with psychedelic treatments (beta=0.21; beta=0.67; p<0.001) compared to antidepressants. Conversely, antidepressants were more often linked with negative emotion and risk-related language (beta=0.25; beta=0.23; p<0.001).
The study suggests this imbalance could shape patient expectations and treatment decisions, potentially affecting adherence and clinical outcomes. The authors call for more balanced media reporting to support informed decision-making as research into psychedelics evolves.
