The World Health Organization reports a rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak in central Africa, with 471 confirmed cases and 84 deaths across the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Cases surged by 100 in just 24 hours, fueling fears the epidemic could rival the devastating 2014 West Africa outbreak.
The outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists. The WHO and Africa CDC launched a $518 million response plan to strengthen surveillance and infection prevention.
"This is a serious outbreak, and we need to move fast and together," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
