The World Health Organization warns the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is still spreading. The death toll has now surpassed 500.

WHO Representative Dr. Anne Ancia stated from Bunia that the true scale of the outbreak has not been fully established. As of early July, health authorities have recorded over 1,500 confirmed cases.

Dr. Ancia described treatment centers in affected provinces like Ituri and North Kivu as being at "saturation point." She also cited critical shortages, saying "we do not have enough ambulances" to meet all needs in the region.

The outbreak is unfolding in areas plagued by active conflict and displacement. This violence, involving clashes between government forces and armed militias, severely complicates the medical response.

Despite the challenges, there are some positive developments. Daily testing capacity has increased significantly thanks to new decentralized laboratories. On July 2nd, a clinical trial began to evaluate two potential treatments, MBP134 and remdesivir, for the Bundibugyo species of the virus.
