New findings confirm fatigue is a central feature of disease activity in myositis, not just a secondary symptom. This crucial indicator should be routinely assessed.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) involve muscle inflammation. However, patients frequently report fatigue as a most debilitating aspect, impacting quality of life significantly.

A six-month study followed 50 adults with myositis. Results showed 67% reported moderate to severe fatigue, with over half exhibiting similar levels on standardized measures.

Crucially, fatigue correlated closely with multiple indicators of disease activity, including muscle involvement, physician assessments, pain, and physical function. This association remained consistent over time.

Furthermore, fatigue improved in parallel with reductions in disease activity. Patients responding to treatment also experienced meaningful fatigue reductions, suggesting fatigue is a sensitive marker for monitoring treatment response.

The study's findings argue for fatigue to be considered an integral component of myositis disease activity. Incorporating fatigue into routine assessment can provide a more complete picture of patient burden and treatment effectiveness.

While the study size was small, the consistency of findings supports prioritizing fatigue in myositis management. Ignoring fatigue means missing a major part of the disease.
