Higher fitness levels and favorable body composition are linked to better chemotherapy tolerance in breast cancer patients, according to new research.

Researchers analyzed data from 890 patients undergoing neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy. Those with greater muscle mass, lower fat levels, and stronger cardiorespiratory function were more likely to receive optimal drug doses.

Over 80% of participants achieved a relative dose intensity of 85% or higher. Patients with less adiposity - including lower BMI and waist-to-hip ratios - tolerated treatments better.

However, these factors had limited impact on tumor response rates. Only a higher lean-to-fat mass ratio was clearly tied to improved pathological outcomes.

The study highlights how modifiable lifestyle traits like fitness and diet may support effective cancer treatment delivery.
