A new study from the University of Agder in Norway, published in the journal Nutrients, reveals a strong link between diet and the mental health of young children.
Researchers analyzed data from 363 four-year-olds and their mothers. They found that children who eat more fruits and vegetables show fewer signs of anxiety, depression, and withdrawal. In contrast, those who consume more sweet and salty snacks exhibit higher rates of aggression and attention issues.
The findings underscore the importance of early diet on lifelong social and academic outcomes. “Mental health challenges are increasing worldwide,” the authors note, highlighting the need for early identification of preventable factors.
