A public forum in Singapore, "Lessons for Life: Cancer Care Conversations," hosted by Mount Elizabeth Hospitals and Parkway Cancer Centre, emphasized that early detection, financial preparedness, and strong support systems are critical to better cancer outcomes.
Close to 500 attendees gathered at Pan Pacific Singapore on April 18 for the event, which marked Parkway Cancer Centre's 20th anniversary. Clinicians, financial advisers, and patient advocates discussed a holistic approach to care.
Dr. Peter Chow, CEO of IHH Healthcare Singapore, noted that modern medicine now addresses cancer through advanced treatment, early detection tools, and science-based prevention. Nearly 40 percent of global cancer cases are linked to modifiable risk factors like smoking and alcohol.
Panellists urged individuals to learn their family medical history and consider genetic testing. A multi-cancer early detection blood test from Lucence can screen for up to 50 cancer types.
Financial planning was also highlighted. Speakers noted that no single insurance plan covers all costs, urging regular policy reviews. Support networks, including peer groups and professional counseling, help patients navigate treatment and recovery.
