Patients with brain metastases and Type 2 diabetes who used glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) had a 37% lower risk of death over three years, according to a 2026 retrospective study.
Brain metastases-cancer spread to the brain-are linked to high mortality. Comorbid Type 2 diabetes worsens outcomes through metabolic and inflammatory pathways.
GLP-1RAs may counteract these effects via anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective mechanisms.
The study analyzed 850 adults diagnosed with both conditions between 2018 and 2024, all prescribed GLP-1RAs within six months before diagnosis. Benefits were consistent across major cancers and most GLP-1RA drugs, excluding liraglutide.
Researchers noted limitations: no causal proof, incomplete patient data, and reliance on academic medical centers-reducing generalizability.
Future prospective trials are needed to confirm these findings.
