In the U.S., 1 in 4 people living with HIV are women, and 1 in 5 new diagnoses involve women. Black women account for almost 3 in 5 new cases.
The CDC recommends HIV testing for everyone aged 13 to 64 at least once, and annually for those with risk factors like:
- Anal or vaginal sex with someone who has HIV
- Multiple partners since last test
- Needle sharing
- Sex for money or drugs
- STIs, hepatitis, or TB
- Unknowing partner’s history
- Men who have had sex with men
Pregnant individuals should test once per pregnancy.
Testing options include:
- Healthcare providers
- Public clinics
- At-home self-tests
Early diagnosis improves outcomes and prevents transmission.
