The Manitoba government is paying a U.S. firm to recruit emergency room physicians from south of the border for temporary positions in rural and northern communities.
Shared Health, the province's central health planning body, partnered with Utah-based Global Medical Staffing. The company has posted five job openings in recent days.
The postings highlight Manitoba's natural attractions including polar bears, beluga whales and the northern lights.
Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara says Shared Health pays the American company a "minimal" amount. The government hopes temporary placements will become permanent.
Manitoba's NDP government previously promised to favor Canadian companies for contracts but allows exceptions.
