Health experts are issuing stark warnings about the 'paracetamol challenge,' a concerning social media trend that poses significant health risks. Reports indicate adolescents are allegedly competing online to ingest the largest quantities of paracetamol.
While references to this challenge date back to 2015, concrete evidence of widespread participation on platforms like TikTok remains scarce, with most content focused on warnings from health professionals and news outlets. However, in Belgium, the Hospital Centre EpiCURA confirmed treating three patients for paracetamol overdose in February following alleged participation in the challenge. The Belgian Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products has issued a formal warning, emphasizing that paracetamol has no psychotropic effects, even at high doses.
Other European nations have also noted a surge in overdose cases. Health authorities in Spain, Finland, and Portugal have urged parents to discuss the dangers of medication misuse with children and to monitor for symptoms of intoxication such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or excessive drowsiness. The Order of Pharmacists in Portugal highlighted the severe health risks, noting that paracetamol toxicity can lead to irreversible liver damage, liver transplantation, and, in extreme cases, death. Kidney damage is also a potential consequence.
Adults should not exceed a daily dose of 4 grams of paracetamol, with recommended intake between 500 mg and 1g every 4-6 hours. For children, the dose is weight-dependent, typically around 60 milligrams per kilogram. Paracetamol, a widely accessible medication for pain and fever, is generally safe when used as directed but can cause severe adverse effects in cases of overdose.
