Singapore is expanding financial support for HIV patients. Starting June 1, the monthly MediSave withdrawal limit for antiretroviral drugs will increase from S$550 to S$850. Additionally, patients will be permitted to use their family members' MediSave accounts to cover treatment costs.
Minister of State for Health Rahayu Mahzam announced the changes on Saturday at the Singapore HIV, Hepatitis & STIs Congress, stating that lowering financial barriers at diagnosis encourages early treatment and reduces gaps in care.
Singapore reported 166 new HIV cases in 2025 among citizens and permanent residents, a slight increase from 151 cases in 2024. Notably, 55.4% of these new cases were diagnosed at a late stage. The Health Ministry stressed that year-on-year fluctuations are expected but the numbers are a reminder that efforts to combat stigma must continue.
Health officials noted that HIV self-testing kits have been selling at an average of over 800 units per month since their launch last January, broadening access beyond clinical settings.
Singapore is working toward the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets for ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Currently, about 90% of people living with HIV know their status, 96% of those diagnosed are receiving treatment, and 94% on treatment have achieved viral suppression.
Officials emphasized that early treatment can reduce the virus to undetectable levels, eliminating the risk of sexual transmission after six months of consistent suppression.
